34 degrees. It was a dark and stormy night... or an overcast late afternoon before the big storm predicted for later today. Snow, maybe rain if it stays warm enough. Around post 300 I spot two doves. A pair perhaps, settling down to ride out the storm (4 and 5). Later, on the other side of the pond, I see a HUGE flock of seagulls, perhaps as many as I've ever seen over the pond, settling down, perhaps, preparing for the impending storm.

33 degrees. Bright and sunny with a strong breeze from the north and west, as best I can determine, making the day feel below freezing. Lots of drifting snow on the east side (16, 17, 18, 20, 21), of the pond. Some sort of insect cocoon is visible in 19. The Cardinal was singing again today at post 163. And Kiowa gets an especially long backrub today!

28 degrees. Overcast, slight breeze. Squizzle was working at a small hole in the ice. He's collecting critters, water bugs (copepods, fragilaria, pediastrum, etc) from the water under the ice covering the small pond. The water temperature is 32.2 F according to his digital thermometer. The Cardinal was singing around post 200 again today. Ranger Jean reports that the Loch Fresh Monster has been spotted near the switchbacks.

28 degrees. It snowed last night and into the wee hours of this morning. The path around the pond was cleared, mostly. The Cardinal was out singing today. See the last picture of the day where an outline is visible. Cassady is limping a bit today. Snow and sand gets caught between her toes and acts like an abrasive. We encounter a local guy with a TV program who stopped to look at the Cardinal. Then he invites me on his program to talk about Fresh Pond and my pictures.

25 degrees. Partly cloudy. Big hawk of some kind near the golf course entrance. Photo number four, in a tree. Wingspan of about 4 feet, creamy white on underside, gray with flecks of black and white on top. Second sighting near the main parking lot. More talking with other dog owners today.

35 degrees. Some nice clouds. Just enough clouds. Cassady gets into her first dog fight. A female, black Lab, I think. This dog did not back down when Cassady snapped at her to indicate the meeting and greeting was over. It came after her a second time. Then I moved in between the two of them. The owner, a niced lady, suggested I could kick her dog for being so bad. No, I replied, I'm just trying to get between the two of them. Then there were a number of long conversations with two other dog owners--and their dogs, who did not want me to stop scratching their backs. The large Golden Retriever saw me coming, a scond time, about half way around, and ran towards me for more scratching and rubbing.

31 degrees. Snow. Mild blizzard. It was somewhere between rain and snow when we started out. But after descending the switchbacks, and about a hundred yards on from there, counter-clockwise, it was all snow and a miny blizzard. Still, many people out with their dogs. If only I had a nickel for each time someone remarked, that is so cute, about Cassady's yellow raincoat. If you are wondering why there are no Fresh Pond pictures from yesterday, settle down. Cynthia and I were in New York City to see THE GATES in Central Park.

32 degrees. Partly cloudy. Some wind. But one of the big frights of my life--Cassady disappears for about 20 minutes. I lost sight of her. No idea where she was. Ran back and forth a couple of times shouting for her. It started when she was behind me. Then I run into a pack of dogs including two bulldogs. Trying to get a picture of them I failed to see her go ahead of me. I thought she was still behind me. Phew! Found her at last.

45+ degrees. Almost clear skies. Breezy. Frozen fish, number 12, in the little pond. Some animal digging in the grass/topsoil in number 20, 21, and 24. A pair of swans were sighted near Sousa's Rock. Tiny tornado at post number 60. I was dumbfounded and stopped dead in my tracks. It varied from a foot to four feet across and two feet high to six or more high. It lasted a minimum of 30 seconds and maybe as long as a minute or more. If only I had my video camera, I thought, completely forgetting the two photo cameras in my hands.

50+ degrees. Bright sun. Erosion photos in abundance today because of the melting snow. The abandoned baby stroller is still sitting by the woods. We went out quite a bit earlier today. One of the regulars asked where we'd been. Around, but just earler today. Spring-like today.

36 degrees. Overcast and windy. Looks like rain. Today's walk followed a visit to a local school and a classroom discussion about erosion--to be followed in its turn, by a walk to Fresh Pond and studying soil types and their relationship to erosion.
